RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
