Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Drop Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to the Game

The winter game drop for Minecraft has landed — and it brings with it the initial fresh armament added to the title since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it could very well alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you love chaos.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mounts of Mayhem update also introduces a host of fresh elements and enhancements centered around animal mounts in the game. That focus made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the development team had already known it was time for a fresh combat tool.

"We knew initially that we wanted a new weapon that would provide extended reach, and we envisioned it for fighting from atop a creature," noted a lead developer. "We tried out a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we tested our prototypes and also was visually fitting for the intended purpose."

If you're wondering whether fighting from a saddle means you can tilt at your companions on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an offensive action excellently designed for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is one of the biggest applications for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the developer continues. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you lower your spear and deal more damage [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] ideal for knightly combat."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The unruly pleasure doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the elytra and flying forth and making some real mayhem," she teases.

In other words: Sky jousting is now a reality, and it needs to become an Olympic sport immediately.

Another key feature in this new update is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is based on the seashells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and mounted for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it transport you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also preserve your air supply, so there's no requirement to return to the surface for a breath.

The other inclusions are primarily things that want to kill you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, often with a zombie villager on its back. If you are able to defeat the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've been thinking about this challenge for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the ideal opportunity to also unveil something for underwater," the lead explains. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a number of concepts for aquatic rides that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked compelling, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also notes that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] add variety to what you discover underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Additional features include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive skeletons that can survive in the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you end up in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an notable look that sees their bones protruding. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be found at night with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.

The last two things on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some long-overdue tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford rivers and lakes while atop a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now available at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the best defense it is worthy of.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

Overall, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear on its own — and the pandemonium it invites — would have constituted a significant enhancement. Add in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is available for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
