Top-Flight News: Mejbri Banned for Spitting; City Boss Says 'Back Line Has to Get Better'

From the world of top-flight updates, a significant midfielder has been issued a lengthy ban, a head coach has pointed to a player's mistakes to prove a point, and the Manchester City manager has demanded defensive betterment after an erratic win.

1. Mejbri Issued Four-Match Ban and Financial Penalty

The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri has been given a four-game ban and a £15,000 penalty for misconduct during October's fixture against Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed Mejbri was referred an independent regulatory commission following an incident where he spat towards visiting supporters around the 67th mark of a 2-0 victory for Burnley.

A statement explained: “A Regulatory Commission has sanctioned the Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions during their Premier League game with Leeds of 18 October. The charge was that the player behaved against the rules of football or in an improper manner and/or engaging in abusive and/or unacceptable behaviour by spitting at or in the area of Leeds United supporters.”

The statement added, “Mejbri later admitted the allegation, and the panel imposed a four-match suspension and a fine following proceedings. The panel's written reasons for its decisions are to be released in due course.” The team, currently in 19th place in the Premier League standings, visit 12th-place Newcastle on Saturday.

2. Maresca Points to Tosin's Errors to Make a Point

The Blues' manager Enzo Maresca has stated that not having seasoned players is not an issue for his club, pointing out how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop the 28-year-old from playing a bad game in the defeat to Leeds United.

The Italian coach, who manages the youngest team in the division, does not feel that mentality played a part in the setback. He presented his argument by criticising Tosin, the oldest outfield player in the lineup, after he produced an error-strewn performance in central defence.

“People always mention a lack of experience after we drop points,” Maresca stated. “When we defeated Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, nobody was mentioning experienced players. I understand that if we lose, people are always searching for the reason why, but in my view the reason why we lost against Leeds is not because of inexperience, it was because we just weren't at our best.”

He added, “Who was the most senior player on our team in the match? It was Tosin. Was he any good? So, it’s not about his age. It’s about those 11 men, they were not up to standard.”

3. Guardiola Says Defence 'Has to Get Better'

The Manchester City manager has insisted his team have taken lessons from a midweek thriller against Fulham and the episode has now been in the past. City held on to claim a 5-4 victory in a incredible encounter on Tuesday, after leading 5-1 with almost an hour gone.

This followed they fought off a Leeds comeback and won 3-2 in the previous game, prompting more questions about if City are resilient required to mount a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “It’s behind us,” he commented. “Good learnings, I hope. In the Premier League, for every team, you have to learn from both good and bad performances and results and focus on what's next.”

“Of course I am worried,” he admitted. “We try to understand the cause, so as not to allow the goals. After conceding three against Leeds, and five against Fulham it shows the two versions, correct? So, we have we have done plenty of good things. Yet how many attempts had Leeds have? Three? They scored two. It’s not bad. How many shots on target for Fulham have? Five, six? So the average of shots conceded is too high. We have to improve.”

4. Newcastle Prioritise on Defenders' Deals

Newcastle United's recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made contract discussions involving key backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda for the club. Wilson joined from Nottingham Forest recently and is reassured to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a contract that runs until 2029 and, potentially, 2030.

This allows Wilson free to focus on talks with Livramento and Botman's agents. With the former’s current deal set to expire in 2027 and the latter’s a year later, Newcastle's efforts have assumed some importance.

“The initial three or four days after starting is when I found that Sandro’s deal was much better than I was expecting,” he stated. “However, it is well known that the club would want to renew Tino’s contract and also would want to renew Sven Botman’s too. Those discussions are ongoing.”

Manager Eddie Howe will be without Botman for the home game with Burnley on Saturday, and he likely to be out for a further period.

5. Nuno Confirms Paquetá Will Start Against Brighton

West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá will return to start when they face Brighton this Sunday, having completed his suspension for the sending-off he received Liverpool.

“That incident is behind us,” Nuno remarked. “I am positive it will not happen again because he himself admitted his mistake. We discussed it about it in the dressing room. I believe it is over and it will not be repeated.”

He also understands the significant pressure on his side, currently in the relegation zone before Saturday's fixtures. “We can't ignore it,” he said. “It's the situation. We have to confront it. We are fighting for our top-flight status. We cannot hide it.”

Arteta Impressed by Striker Stand-in Merino

The Spanish midfielder could continue leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward even when the club's usual strikers are fit again. Merino has been deployed as an emergency number nine because of fitness issues to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Merino found the net for Arsenal’s first goal versus Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for their second goal during a 2-0 win that maintained {their|
